The open league is split between A and B once the regular season ends. The upper half of the open league competes in the A League playoffs while the lower half compete in the B league playoffs.

This league has always been Open & Novice, with Open splitting into A & B playoffs after the regular season.

Before this season (Spring 2008) began, I polled 10 coaches who, if we were to split the open regular season into A & B, would be in the A. 8 out of 10 opted to keep the format as is so we did.

The reason I only polled those teams is that they would essentially be playing a more rigorous and confined schedule than their Maryland counterparts, and then would we seed the top Maryland teams into the A playoffs. You`d have, say 3 Maryland Open teams at 7-0, 6-1, 5-2 and 9 VA "A" teams with records ranging from 7-0 to possibly 0-7. You could not seed the A playoffs based on record in this case, and there would be no objective way to do it. Same wouold go for the Maryland teams in B.
